The short answer
A 60-second explainer video in India costs roughly ₹25,000 to ₹3,00,000. By style, per finished minute: motion graphics ₹40,000 to ₹90,000, 2D character animation ₹55,000 to ₹1,20,000, and 3D ₹1,20,000 to ₹2,50,000 or more (MotionCube, March 2026). AI-avatar explainers start around ₹8,000 for 60 seconds (SR Creative Productions).
The style sets the range. The script, the number of review rounds and the versions you need decide where in that range you land.
Price by animation style
MotionCube, a studio that publishes its pricing research, gives these per-minute ranges for India in 2026:
| Style | Per finished minute (India) | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Whiteboard | ₹25,000 to ₹50,000 | Simple ideas, training, low budgets |
| Motion graphics (2D) | ₹40,000 to ₹90,000 | SaaS, fintech, data and process explainers |
| 2D character animation | ₹55,000 to ₹1,20,000 | Consumer products and stories with people in them |
| 3D animation | ₹1,20,000 to ₹2,50,000+ | Hardware, medical, anything with an inside |
| SaaS / product demo | ₹50,000 to ₹1,00,000 | Software walkthroughs |
SR Creative Productions, a Mumbai studio, quotes lower for AI-assisted work: ₹15,000 to ₹40,000 for a 60-second motion graphics video, ₹8,000 to ₹15,000 for a 60-second AI-avatar explainer, and ₹40,000 to ₹1,20,000 for a 30-second 3D product animation.
Price by who makes it
| Who | Typical price | Best when |
|---|---|---|
| AI or DIY tools | ₹0 to ₹5,000 a month | Internal videos and quick social clips |
| Freelancer | ₹15,000 to ₹60,000 | One simple video with a clear brief |
| Specialist animation studio | ₹60,000 to ₹3 lakh | A custom explainer with a proper script and design |
| Full-service agency | ₹1.5 lakh to ₹5 lakh+ | Strategy, script and production for brand-critical launches |
What moves the price
- Length, but less than you think. Scripting, voice casting and style development cost about the same for 30 seconds as for 90, so short videos cost more per minute.
- Custom characters. MotionCube puts custom character design at ₹10,000 to ₹30,000 extra, a one-time cost you can reuse in later videos.
- Voiceover. A professional Indian English voice for a 60 to 90 second script adds about ₹3,000 to ₹8,000. International accents and extra languages cost more.
- 3D. Modelling, rigging, lighting and rendering make 3D about two to three times the price of the same film in 2D.
- Review rounds. The quiet budget killer. Every round after the script stage costs animation time.
- Versions. A 16:9 master, a 9:16 cut, a 15-second ad and a Hindi version are four deliverables, not one.
- GST. Video production services attract 18% GST in India. Check whether a quote includes it.
Where explainer budgets go wrong
From our own projects, the expensive mistakes are rarely about rates. They are about decisions made late:
- Paying for two minutes when 60 seconds would do. Most explainers need one use case. A second use case is a second film.
- Skipping the script stage. A change to a script costs a few hours. The same change after animation costs days.
- Six reviewers at the end. Agree who signs off before the first draft, not after the fourth.
- Forgetting the vertical cut. If the film will live on LinkedIn and Instagram, plan the 9:16 framing from the storyboard.
India compared with London or New York
MotionCube's comparison: a ₹90,000 motion graphics video from a top Indian studio would cost about $6,000 to $8,000 from a comparable agency in London or New York. That gap is why many US and European startups now commission explainers from Indian studios.
How to get an accurate quote
Send any studio these eight things and the quote will be close to the final bill:
- What the video must make a viewer do or understand
- Who the viewer is
- Target length
- Two or three reference videos you like
- Whether you have a script, a rough draft or nothing
- Voiceover language and accent
- Where it will play, and the versions you need
- Your deadline, and a budget range if you have one
Questions people ask
How much does a 1-minute explainer video cost in India?
Roughly ₹40,000 to ₹1,20,000 for 2D motion graphics or character animation from a professional studio, and ₹1,20,000 to ₹2,50,000 or more for 3D, per MotionCube's 2026 guide. AI-assisted videos can cost far less.
Is 3D animation more expensive than 2D?
Yes, about two to three times as much for the same length, because of modelling, rigging, lighting and rendering.
Should I hire a freelancer or a studio?
A freelancer at ₹15,000 to ₹60,000 suits one simple video with a fixed brief. For anything brand-critical, or a series, a studio's script and review process is usually worth the premium.
Are AI explainer videos good enough?
For internal training and quick social clips, often yes. For a homepage or a launch, the script and design still decide whether people watch, and those are human jobs.
Does the price include GST?
Not always. Video production services attract 18% GST in India, so check whether a quote is inclusive or exclusive.
How long does an explainer video take to make?
Usually three to five weeks for 2D and four to seven for 3D, with the script and style frames taking about half the time.
